The footprint is an introductory project used to help students get to know one another through self expression. The main idea of the project is to have a cut out of the students foot and from there use three different types of media to describe themselves. When the project is completed the students then explain their foot, all while introducing themselves to their classmates.
I would use my footprint to introduce myself to my new students by stating my name and a few of my favorite things. By standing in front of the class and displaying my artwork I show a side of vulnerability to the students and allow them to know a bit about me personally, who I am outside of the classroom. When I introduce myself using the footprint I am also giving the students an example of what the final project should look like and giving them some ideas to start with.
An idea for an extension activity would be to have the students complete the project using both feet, one foot would explain the things about them and what they like and the other would describe things they want to do or places they would like to go in the future. After the students introduce themselves to the class, their footprints will be placed on the wall in the hallway. The theme for the year could be "Journeying Off Into A New Year" and the students footprints will be staggered going from one end of the hallway to the other, looking like someone walking. Then artwork that is completed throughout the year will be placed in front of the footprints so when parents night arrives they can see the 'journey' the students took from the beginning of the year to the present.
